A Full Oil Tank is a Happy oil tank this summer
2 minute read
Before you jump into summer, don’t forget to fill your home heating oil tank! It might sound strange because we’re no longer waking up to freezing temperatures, but a full oil tank actually protects it and improves the tank’s life expectancy.
Just like condensation can cause problems within your home—musty smells, decaying wood, and even mold—it can also cause problems within your oil tank. When warmer or fluctuating temperatures are combined with a partially filled oil tank, condensation starts to form on the bare walls inside the tank, eventually dripping down into the fuel. Because water is heavier than oil, it sinks to the bottom of your tank where it creates bacteria that leads to sediment. Heating oil sediment is a combination of dirt, rust, and oxidized fuel settled on the bottom of your tank.
This debris at the bottom of your tank can lead to clogged supply lines, corrosion inside your tank, decreased furnace or boiler efficiency, and can even cause your system to seize—leaving you without heat or hot water. Some of these problems are repairable but we often find that the oil tank needs to be replaced.
Our suggestion:
A full home heating oil tank over the summer prevents condensation AND if an early fall cold snap hits Connecticut, you’ll be ready to switch the heat back on!
