Dirty A/C Filters are BIG Problems

2-minute read

If you’re hoping to keep cool this summer, we have two simple recommendations to keep your A/C system in its best shape: 1) Schedule your annual A/C service check and 2) Regularly change your air filter. For now, let’s focus on your air filter…

A dirty filter can cause all sorts of problems and might lead to costly repairs. Here are some of the most common problems caused by a dirty air filter:

Short-cycling: A/C systems cycle on and off to keep your home at a consistent temperature but a dirty filter can cause that cycle to happen more frequently, using more energy and costing you money in the long term.

Allergens: A full air filter can cause allergens and other allergy or asthma triggers to be released into your home and lead to the growth of mold in your ductwork.

Poor circulation: When air can’t easily move through an air filter, the cool air your system is producing ends up uneven and harder to maintain.

Shorter lifespan: As dust and dirt settle on the internal components of your A/C system, you’ll start to see us more often in response to unit breakdowns and other needed repairs. This damage to your unit can significantly shorten its lifespan and lead to a costly unplanned replacement.

Changing your air filter is often one of the easiest DIY projects for your home. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Get the right-sized filter. Check your current filter for the size or your A/C system’s manual.

  • Turn off your system. Safety first! Always switch your system to off when changing the filter. This also prevents dirt and dust from being sucked into the system while the filter is being replaced.

There are a lot of factors to determine how frequently we recommend you change your air filter – people, pets, size of home, etc.:
